Micro Movie Marathon Winter 2012 Major Awards

Scandal – Two projects slipped through that were over the 3:00 minute time limit, including James Weston’s avante garde Wind. WTF, he’s an M3 co-founder… can’t anyone be trusted?!

Aside from this outrageous breach of protocol AND a chronic snafu with the countdown movies, the 2012 Winter Micro Movie Marathon was the best yet, with over 31 entries totaling 113 minutes and 17 seconds.

The Michigan Movie Makers don’t do cliche categories like best actor and like that. Boring! The Major Awards for the Winter 2012 Micro Movie Marathon are tuned to the diverse energy of the ecosystem.

The coveted Schrödinger’s Cat, refers to the famous thought experiment proposed by Erwin Schrödinger in which a cat is simultaneously dead and alive. Schrödinger’s Cat is awarded to the movie that audience members cannot decide whether they love or hate. The award is embodied by a sun bleached thigh bone possibly belonging to a feral cat but more likely a racoon, discovered by James Weston Schaberg and Mykl Werth on a blustery dune hike. Patrick Kelly took Schrödingers Cat for Jesus on the Floor, (6 red marbles). This is Patrick’s second M33M Major Award, ugoboy!

The prestigious Brilliant Beginnings recognizes emerging movie makers. Like a whiff of something wonderful or the fizz and sputter that precedes the upward whoosh of a handcrafted D engine bottle rocket, Brilliant Beginnings is awarded to the project that is not quite a shoe, but so much more than a sock. Brilliant Beginnings is symbolized by a pair of red plaid knitted knee highs, complete with thin rubber soles and fuzzy shin tassels. Jimmy Tuffts snagged Brilliant Beginnings for his eerie CLIP_028, (5 green marbles)

The iconic Nest of the Northlings is awarded to the project that either proposes or reveals a righteous regional aesthetic for northwestern Michigan. Imagine a gun show crossed with the Bioneers – what can encompass the totality of our magnificent mix? To represent the Nest of the Northlings,  a two dollar bill from an imaginary utopian Northern Nation that we might someday aspire to be, the paper ancestor of the Toonie. Nest of the Northlings went to Jeff Lange for What’s in a Michigan Wetland, (6 dusky lavender marbles). Joe Carter accepted.

The M33M Winter 2012 staff included Dan Kelly (Facilitator), M’Lynn Hartwell (Awards Tally), Tim Hall and Mike (Marble Masters), Scott Tompkins (Keeper of the Cups), Joe Carter (surrogate awardee). Special Thanks to Mike and Kim of the Inside Out Gallery for hosting M33M.

We’re having trouble with the new YouTube playlists, so standby for a posting of links to the entire Micro Movie Marathon, rightchere.

  2. My other favs are “We Think Were Genuises”, “Horsefeathers Promo”, “My Backyard” and “Sheridan the Musical”. I really wish Jeff Morgan would send us a link to “The Saga of Larry Tunner” political ad – that’s a feature project currently in production somewhere south.
