So… you want to make a movie? Tomorrow, Traverse City’s native son David Marek presents the making of Somewhere West, a narrative feature.
Dan Kelly (that’s me) and a bevy of lucky VIPs recently attended an invitation only screening at the State Theater. Somewhere West is the story of a dying guy who decides to hit the road rather than languish in a hospital, and features iconic locations across the USA.
David will share the joys and sorrows of going mostly solo for pre, production and post. He’ll reveal how he kept the budget under 25k, explain his iconoclastic approach to production and signature Dissociative ™ editorial technique, show geeky gear solutions and much more. Our questions will drive his discussion so go ahead – ask him anything!
Ok, Dissociative is not really ™, I just stuck that in there – but this morning I did snatch up about 20 domain names including dissociative.com, dissociative.net, dissociative.org and so on. Seems like a good investment, after David’s talk I can flip those suckers for mucho dinero or, wait for it… molto di niro.
Mark Dragovich is proposing a new resource, the M3 report. This would be a monthly overview of projects happening regionally and statewide, based on intelligence gathered from the Michigan Film Council, industry sources and the community at large. The idea is for M3 folks to get proactive about employment and experience opportunities and make sure movies in Michigan get robust support. We can also invite directors, producers and actors to come and hang with their peeps at M3 meetings.
Looking forward to seeing you all. Did I mention that there will be snacks? Snacks!
