Summary October 23, 2013

The M3 met TBAISD* Career Tech Center Film and New Media classroom/studio, (phew!) aka FNM. FNM’s Advisory Group meeting ran long, so M3 was a little late getting started. There’s some overlap between these two groups so the transition was fuzzy.

The first order of business was much hobnobbing and hand clasping, a clear indicator that folks were genuinely happy to see each other. Since movie making is heavy on collaboration and collaboration requires peers, intense hobnobbing is very promising. After wresting order out of chaos, Dan Kelly reported that after languishing for months, the M3 Industry Interviews were back on the front burner.

Last March, M3 interviewed about 20-30 of our members as an outreach to legislators. This was a spin off of our SWOT with Deb Havens. Why the delay? The robust participation of regional shooters was not matched by a stampede of editors. Dan’s plan to tackle the 10 or so hours of footage was first select the best moments from each individual interview and then use those best moments to compile the final project. Initially Andy Case and Justin Warnes helped with selects. Morgan Burke-Beyers wanted to jump in too, but he was sans computer for some months despite the best efforts of Joe Carter et al. In May, the indomitable Ben Woody was authorized to complete the selects. The files have since languished on the drives of Trickster Pictures, a metaphorical poke in the posterior of M3’s beloved co-founder and the writer of this very post, Dan Kelly (blessed be his name). No longer do they languish, Dan has assumed the mantle of glory, (cue the trumpets and tympanies).

The objective is to wrap the project for a screening around mid November in Grand Rapids, the southern most tip of our Northern Michigan region. Deb Havens continues to advise.

Scott Tompkins asked FNM student Jake Burgess to screen his scholarship entry about drunk driving. A aspiring fabricator, Jake built a special rig to hold a beer bottle smack dab in front of the camera. The project was pretty compelling.

Krystn Madrine gave a brief report on the stellar experience of Postapalooza 2013 and raved about her recent gig as a production assistant on the new Scarab boat shoot.

Richard Brauer provided high lights from the September Dog Man 2 shoot and offered to give the group a full on efficient production workshop based on his years of feature experience. The only caveat is that we have to take a sacred oath to avoid all questions that involve any possible tangential reference to piracy or SAG, two subjects which cause him to bark and froth at the mouth, not unlike (one imagines) the mythic Dog Man on which he is building his empire.

Mike Matthews brought some fine hand made tamales (with a vegetarian option) which were consumed by the most hard core of the core membership after everyone else had left. Dan did NOT announce these tamales earlier when more of M3 was present as that would have meant less for him – and his mama didn’t raise no fool. J Mark Eiden, Krystn and Dan were totally wowed. By that time we had scarfed a gaggle, Scott was eager to see our backs.

Next meeting November 27, mark your calendar.
