M33M Summer 2013

What

M33M is a biannual festival of 3 minute (or less) movies made by people in and around Northern Michigan.

The acronym M33M (aka Micro Movie Marathon) is derived as follows: Michigan Movie Makers (M3) + 3 Minutes (3M) = M33M.

All genres are welcome – trailers for longer projects, sneak previews, short form narrative, mini documentaries, spoofs, show reels, experimental, beyond category, commercials, promotional, pure art, animation – s’all good!

This just in – Vines are now eligible! Same entry process for Vines as for 3 minute movies, see How below.

Who

All Northern Michigan Movie Makers are encouraged to enter, including commercial studios, entrepreneurs, artists, students and enthusiasts. It might seem counter intuitive to lump together a hodgepodge of expertise and motivations, but a vital community is diverse! We are are an…

Ecosystem?!

We may have different reasons for making movies, but we all contribute to a vibrant production community. If an oak is an acorn’s way of making more acorns, could a mentor be a protégé’s way of making more protégés? Experience and experimentation are complementary.

Everyone can and should enter a 3 minute movie.

Why

• The first pragmatic outcome is expand and update an inventory of the community, of our collective movie making talent and resources. Because movie making is (usually) collaborative, knowing who is out there and what they are up to is key. A community inventory is a asset for everyone’s future projects – whether you’re an Oscar Winner or YouTube hero.

• Second, recognizing and celebrating our regional accomplishments builds momentum and inspires new work. That’s why there’s Major Awards!

Summer M33M features the double special Major Award for best rejected TCFF bumper, the Golden Boot. If you’ve entered the TCFF and FIM Group Bumper Contest and been rejected, re-enter into M33M for a second chance at fame. Your bumper must be no longer than 3 minutes and the rejection email from TCFF must be included. This is an online entry only.

• Third, we always have a goofy good time together, kicking back and soaking up the diversity of dreams. Put faces to the names of your neighbors and fellow cinemaphiles, socialize, hob nob and (dare I say it) network.

When

  • Entry Deadline
    11:59 pm, July 22, 2013
  • M33M Micro Movie Marathon
    6:30 pm – 8:00 pm on Wednesday July 24, 2013

Where

How

  • There are only 3 requirements to enter…
    1. Movies up to 3 minutes long, (including opening titles and closing credits).
If your movie is longer, playback stops at 3 minutes. An abrupt and inelegant method of showcasing your vision, but available for entrants who just can’t or won’t cut a longer movie down. Feel the love.
    2. Movies made by people who were in, from or dreaming about Northern Michigan during production – including residents and visitors. Northern Michigan includes any place north of Grand Rapids including the UP.
    3. Movies must be received by 11:59pm, July 22, 2013.
  • Up to 60 3 minute movies will be selected for the Micro Movie Marathon. Michigan Movie Makers reserves the right to reject any movie we dang well feel like rejecting.

Entering a Vine? In your Vine app, click the three dots and then “Share this post”,  “Copy link” and paste it into an entry email.

We’re using YouTube and DVDs to both enter and screen the movies. If you don’t already have a YouTube account, sign up for free.
