On Wednesday April 24 from 6:30-8:30 pm, M3 congregates at Film and New Media to mesh with our future collaborators.
At M3’s February SWOT we assessed whether or not we had a sustainable film industry in Northwestern Lower Michigan, and the consensus is – not yet. Getting there requires effort on several fronts. Finding more work is key. Once we get the work, hiring each other helps us to know who can do what, the first step in deploying the robust crews needed to handle really ambitious projects. Integrating young people into our teams from the get go gives them a start and keeps new talent from draining out of our community.
An enthusiastic advocate for homegrown talent is Scott Tompkins. Here’s his vision.
“A built-in film community resource (with advocates and allies in place) is the Traverse Bay Intermediate School District’s Career-Tech Center, (CTC). With the advice, partnership, and nurturing of many M3 members, CTC piloted a part time Film and New Media Program in the last school year. Enrollment demands saw the expansion of the program to full time status this school year. 42 students from a five county area attend an AM or PM session – learning through a student-centered, choice-based delivery system. Primary objectives of the program are learning the fundamentals of photography/filmmaking techniques, story-telling, co-operative team work, and core work ethic.
These ready-to-boogie, let’s get ‘er done 11th and 12th grade students are the region’s next wave of visual story tellers, prepared to stand with established movie makers to achieve a sustainable regional industry.”
Film and New Media is hosting the April M3 meeting at their tricked out techno cave at CTC, 880 Parsons Road in Traverse City, map.
The students will showcase recent work, present future plans for feedback and network. Together we’ll explore the potential for internships/apprenticeships and formal/ informal mentoring relationships. An update on Cody Stowe’s innovative but currently clandestine internship with Trickster Pictures might be available.
Mark your calendars, save the date! Another step towards sustainability.
